Sewell was founded in 1905 as a mining town. It was located 7.220 feets above from the sea level. Due to unfortunate events such as avalanche and fire broke out inside the mine caused couple hundreds of miners to died in this town. Moreover, mine was nationalized and couple years after the takeover, Government decided to move families out and destroy the city. Thankfully, they halted their decision and UNESCO designated Sewell a World Heritage Site.
