Matagorda Island, Spanish for “thick bush,” was a military training facility located off the coast of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. It is used by the United States Air Force and Navy for live-fire exercises and weapons testing. As of 1975, it is divided into Matagorda Island State Park on the northeastern end of the island and Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge and State Natural Area, devoted to wildlife refuges.
