The Origin Story
In 1945, a teenager named Wallace “Wally” Bronner started a part-time sign-painting business in his parents’ basement. After painting custom Christmas panels for local town lampposts, he discovered his true calling. By 1954, he and his wife opened the permanent shop that earned him the nickname “Mr. Christmas.”
Mind-Boggling Scale
Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is officially the “World’s Largest Christmas Store”. The showroom alone covers 7.35 acres (about 5.5 football fields). It is so massive that guests are handed paper maps at the entrance. The store stocks over 50,000 distinct items, including 6,000 styles of ornaments and 500 different Nativity scenes. In a typical year, they sell around 600,000 glass ornaments and 530,000 feet of garland.
Cultural Impact
Attracting over two million visitors annually, Bronner’s was officially designated an “Embassy for Michigan Tourism” in 1976. It has drawn an eclectic crowd over the decades—including Hollywood icon John Wayne, who famously called the store in 1976 to personally order a custom Santa suit.
